life lessons from Dory

So, Maili is hitting a stage that I somehow I kept hoping would never happen...although I knew it would.
The other day, playing with friends, she comes and tells me someone called her names. Then, she tells me that at school, some of her friends were making fun of her picture she colored and said it was "definitely NOT beautiful."
These are the things you want to shield your kids from forever. The time when kids get mean and you actually start caring what they think or say. Sticks and stones....... can't we just skip this stage? I know, I know.....it helps us learn and grow or something like that. All I've got to say about that is blah blah blah. Can't I just come out with my big mommy guns and beat up any kid that hurts my girl? Can't I hover over her like a helicopter......can't I just put a big bubble over her so nothing bad ever happens......In the wise words of Dory the fish:
Marlin: I promised I'd never let anything happen to him. Dory: Hmm. That's a funny thing to promise. Marlin: What? Dory: Well, you can't never let anything happen to him. Then nothing would ever happen to him. Not much fun for little Harpo.

Awww. The teasing starts so early, doesn't it. I actually asked my daughter Kindergarten teacher if this was a common thing for their age. I didn't think it would be. I mean, do kindergartners really notice or care what their classmates are wearing? Well, apparently they do. The teacher said the teasing is her greatest pet peeve about the age group. One day Faith told me that when she wears a certain pair of pants the kids say "Oh, you are wearing your pajamas." Silly stuff like that- nothing super mean, but still. I guess we just pray and do our best to give them the confidence to shake that stuff off. :( :| :)

Classic advice from Dr. Dory, isn't it? I want to keep my kids buried in the sand like an ostrich head, but I guess that would be missing the point of this life. But still!

I am not looking forward to this. I too, want to keep Cal safe under my wing.
